Women make a significant contribution to the South African healthcare industry. This Women’s Month, we celebrate the Medshield women who inspire us.
Angela Diaz’s day starts at 4.30am with gym and meticulously plotting her day. The Medshield information technology (IT) manager says: “I’m an obsessive planner and despite planning my work day as best I can, I try to spare some time for the unexpected.”
She says the rapid pace at which she functions in her day-to-day life keeps her focused. “There’s a level of intensity that is my ‘normal’ and that should probably change at some point, but I’m not ready for that yet!
“I strive to be in a place in my life in the future where I have a choice to increase the pace or not and can prioritise time to simply smell the roses”.
Angela has a hospitality background and worked in the industry for 12 years before entering the world of healthcare.
“My career in hospitality started behind a hotel reception desk at the age of 21. I persevered and always aimed high to eventually become a hotel assistant GM [general manager]. I was unexpectedly thrown into the world of IT, having been seconded to assist with the deployment of a new property-management system countrywide.
“At that time, a USB device or memory stick was foreign to me as I didn’t have any IT background whatsoever. How quickly we learn and adapt when thrown into the deep end! Over the years I’ve achieved a project management certification and completed various IT-related courses,” she says.
Angela helps her father coach young boys at a local football club and assists with serving at the tuckshop he runs at the club. She wishes to become a mentor one day. “Communication, commitment, knowledge sharing and not being afraid to get my hands dirty is my strategy for success.”
She believes relationships are important and “knowing who you have in your corner” is key to ensuring success. “Stay focused on your goals and don’t be afraid to commit to seeing them through, no matter how challenging they may be. Be competitive, show the world that you’re alive! Be a ‘finisher’ and do not give up without a fight,” she advises.
Being a sales and broker relations manager takes a lot of skill, but having a human touch when dealing with different personalities makes all the difference. Faith possesses that and more, and this is why she is one of the most inspiring women at Medshield.
“I think it’s very important for young women to have role models – mine are Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama and Yasmin Mogahed. They’re such inspirational and powerful women, and they make me want to be better every single day”. – Taskeen Khan, social media specialist.
Meet contact centre agent Herena Sirindza – a young and ambitious woman who is intent on making a difference in the world.
